# Call Tracking on Your Website

> How Octanist replaces your phone number with a tracking number, and where.

With call tracking, the Octanist pixel shows each visitor a tracking number instead of your own phone number. Calls to that number are forwarded to you and linked to the visit, so you can see which ad, campaign or page led to the call.

## Website numbers

Octanist only replaces the phone numbers you list as **website numbers** in **Call tracking > General**. Add the number exactly as it appears on your website; any notation works:

| On your website | Recognized |
| - | - |
| `085 004 78 67` | Yes |
| `+31 85 004 78 67` | Yes |
| `+31 (0)85 004 78 67` | Yes |
| `0031 85 004 78 67` | Yes |
| `085 – 004 78 67` | Yes |
| `tel:+31850047867` links | Yes |

A number without a country code, such as `085 004 78 67`, is read as a number from your organization's **Default phone country** (**Settings > General**). A number with a country code, such as `+32 2 123 45 67`, keeps its own country. Only valid phone numbers are accepted, so check the default phone country when a number from your country is refused.

All website numbers a visitor sees are replaced by the same tracking number, and calls to it ring your forward number. Only list numbers that should ring there: leave out a separate support line or the number of another branch, or those calls end up at your forward number.

Nothing else on your pages is changed. Other phone numbers, KvK and VAT numbers, IBANs and order numbers always stay as they are.

<Note>
  The tracking number is written the same way as your own number, with the same spaces, dashes, dots and brackets: `085 - 004 78 67` becomes `085 - 083 57 45` and `+31 (0)85 004 78 67` becomes `+31 (0)85 083 57 45`. When the tracking number doesn't fit that layout, for example because it has more digits or a longer area code than your number, or comes from another country, Octanist writes it in the standard notation instead, such as `085 083 5745` or `+31 85 083 5745`.
</Note>

## Which pages show a tracking number

By default, a tracking number is shown on every page that shows your website number. Octanist can also limit this to selected pages, such as the landing pages of your ad campaigns, and only take a tracking number from your pool when a visitor is on one of them. This needs fewer tracking numbers.

When pages are limited, you can choose what happens when the visitor clicks through to another page:

| Setting | Other pages show |
| - | - |
| Only on selected pages | Your own number |
| Keep number for the rest of the visit | The same tracking number |

Page rules only look at the path of a page, such as `/offerte` or `/lp/zonnepanelen`, never at the part after the `?`. A full URL works too: tracking parameters such as `utm_source`, `gclid` or `fbclid` are ignored. A page that is only identified by its query string, such as `https://example.nl/?page_id=42`, can't be selected; use the page's own path instead (in WordPress, its permalink).

Octanist can also limit tracking numbers to **visitors from ads**: visits that arrive through a Google, Microsoft, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, Snapchat, Pinterest or Reddit ad click. The ad link must carry the platform's click ID, such as `gclid` or `msclkid`, which the ad platform adds when auto-tagging is on; a link with only UTM parameters doesn't count. Facebook and Instagram visits count when the link is tagged as paid, for example with `utm_medium=paid_social`.

Contact Octanist to change which pages use tracking numbers. Your current setting is shown in **Call tracking > General**.

## Installation

Call tracking uses the normal [tracking pixel](/docs/incoming-integrations/pixel) with `data-call-tracking="true"`. In [WordPress](/docs/incoming-integrations/wordpress), turn on **Call tracking** in the plugin settings.

```html theme={null}
<script
  src="https://c.octani.st/p"
  data-id="OCT-XXXXXXXX"
  data-consent-mode="auto"
  data-call-tracking="true"
></script>
```

## Excluding part of a page

Add `data-octanist-no-dni` to an element to keep your own number inside it, for example in a footer that must always show your main line:

```html theme={null}
<footer data-octanist-no-dni>
  Main office: 085 004 78 67
</footer>
```

## Good to know

* A visit is one browser tab. A link opened in a new tab starts a new visit.
* The number must be written as one piece of text. A number split over several elements, such as `085 <b>004</b> 78 67`, is not replaced.
* A visitor keeps a tracking number only while they are active on your site. When a tab is left open without activity, the number goes back to your pool and the page shows your own number again; when the visitor becomes active again, they may get a different tracking number. Very long visits also get a new tracking number after a while (2 hours by default), also with **Keep number for the rest of the visit**.
* Form fields are never changed, and neither are pages whose path starts with one of these segments (in any letter case): `/wp-admin`, `/wp-login.php`, `/admin`, `/admin-dashboard`, `/dashboard`, `/leads`, `/settings`, `/auth`, `/login`, `/signin`, `/sign-in`, `/register`, `/signup`, `/sign-up`, `/account`, `/my-account` and `/organization`. Whole segments count: `/account/orders` is skipped, `/accountancy` is not.
